Luc Besson cannot eff up a movie, this much I knew when I went to see LUCY, after having read many a harsh review. I wasn’t expecting it to be as great as it is, though. Like a Sixtine chapel painting of the 21st century, LUCY brings us from the first woman on earth, Lucy, to the real apex of creation, another woman called Lucy, played most stunningly by Scarlett Johanson. Besson unfolds a virtuoso symphony before our eyes: bandes dessinés meets philosophy in bright colours. I seldom walk out of a film utterly stunned and deeply moved. This is an instant classic, summing up Kubrick’s 2001, Coppola’s DRACULA, the Wachowski’s MATRIX and some of Besson’s own works. This film ran through my mind like a tiny Peugeot speeding against a tide of monster trucks (aka Hollywood mainstream). C’est magnifique!
